A Consummate Guide to Used Outdoor Gear Stores in the U.S.

Used gear is the all-time gear!

It'south improve for the environment (as well as for you wallet!)

I have a pretty long history with outdoor gear thrift and consignment stores.  I used to work in one (see Alaska's The Hoarding Marmot below). I worked at the Marmot (as nosotros all fondly called it) for two years while living in Alaska.  It's the longest job I've ever kept and that should say something.

Bated from the fact that the Marmot became like family, it helped cultivate a deep love for pre-loved habiliment and the thought of gear recycling.  I loved the thought that everything had a story AND wasn't drawing precious resources to create new things we already accept enough of. Pretty presently, I minimized my wardrobe and filled it with carefully selected pieces from the Marmot, all of which I love and cherish.

Taking the lessons I learned while working there when I moved into the van, I challenged myself to #NeverBuyNew.  With a few exceptions (like underwear and shoes), I do not buy new wearing apparel. I find them used instead, whether it be in thrift stores, thrifting apps like Poshmark, used outdoor gear websites (like Patagonia Worn Wear and REI Used Gear), and of grade, outdoor specific austerity stores.

Unfortunately, they are not actually that many places relatively speaking at least) cashing in on this wonderful market niche. Those that exercise be can sometimes we hard to track down. I often discover myself request of a location, where to buy used outdoor gear? Google pretty much autofills 2d hand shop near me outdoor gear the second I type an "S".

I decided to finally tackle the problem and create a resources not just for myself but for others: the start of its kind as I am incredibly thrilled to say.  This list contains all of the used outdoor gear austerity and assignment stores in the U.S. every bit of early 2020. In the navigation menu beneath, click on the land yous live in and it'll take yous downwards the folio right to all the stores there.  I was stoked to see all merely two states had at least one used gear store.

While I'1000 pretty proud of how complete this list is, the inquiry for this was a beast.  I'm sure I missed a few here and there. If you know of any used gear retailers that I missed, please permit me know and I'll happily add them to the list.

Let'south all make the 2020s the decade we commencement reusing what we have before ownership things that don't need to exist!  Where or not you want to go as farthermost every bit me and #NeverBuyNew or just want a rad retro Patagonia Snap-T from the 90s, this list tin help you find amazing things that deserve to be given a second run a risk at life.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT OUTDOOR GEAR Consignment

One quick note earlier the list: You'll detect I define for each shop how these stores become their used gear.  Virtually of the time, it comes from folks like you looking to trade their old stuff in for a little cash to buy something new (or old). In that location are 2 principal methods these stores pay clients for gear:

  • Outright: The shop buys an particular direct from you, paying yous with either greenbacks, a check, or shop credit right then and there.

  • Consignment: This means you don't become money up front end.  You get money once the item sells, at which point you'll receive a percent of what it sells for (divers upward front by your contract).

There are pros and cons to both.  Outright payment has the reward that y'all don't need to look for the particular to sell to receive compensation for it. However, you generally receive a lower per centum of the expected sale toll (around 30%) that if y'all consign (where you receive up of 50% of the sale price).
